4. Conclusions Three conclusions may be drawn from our study:
4.1. The Hot Isostatic Pressing technique does have the capability to correct the shrinkage porosity problems we are experiencing with our 85-5-5-5 valve flanges. A successful treatment can be accomplished by using an oven cycle time of between 4 and 6 hours, a pressure of between 10 and 15 ksi, and a temperature of between 813 and 833 degrees Centigrade.
4.2. We do not prsently have a method of pre-determining which valve flanges must be treated with the Hot Isostatic Pressing technique.
Therefore, we may be forced to treat all of the valve flanges (20,000/year) in order to correct the lakage problems of the 15% of the flanges which are defective. In tht case, the cost will be approximately $36.06 per casting.
Alternatively, if we are able to develop a method to predermine which castings are defective--perhaps by means of a radiographic technique--we will have to treat only 3000castings per year. In that case, the total cost will be approximately $100.67 per casting. In either case, the net costs of treating the leakly cstings will wxceed the cost of our current method of scrapping and recycling defective parts (currently $23.56/casting).
4.3. A more economical alternative to the Hot Isostatic Pressing technique might be to change the casting alloy used to manufacture the valve flanges. Theuse of aluminum bronze rather than 85-5-5-5 alloy can result in virtually no shrinkage porosity. A disadvantage of this alternative material is that aluminum bronze is difficult to machine. However, competing manufactures have turned to this alloy, so itsuse as a replacment for 85-5-5-5 should be considered.
