Recommendation of the image processor for the map display equipment

Foreword

To meet the needs of the JATEC Police Agency, the computer graphics laboratory at Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (JRC) must develop map display equipment which can decompress and display compressed maps on a cathode ray tube (CRT) quickly. At this time, JRC does not produce an image processor which can compress and decompress images. Mr. Musen has asked me to select the best processor on the market. The purpose of this report is to show the results after comparing six processors, and to recommend Bluewave's BWS8429 be used in the map display equipment.

Summary

I have researched the performance of six processors made by six different companies. As a result, I have found that the BWS8429 is the best processor because it has the second highest processing speed which meets the speed specifications, it can be operated easily, and it can be delivered immediately. Although the price is somewhat expensive, the processing ability, the compatibility with the host processor (MC68000), and the delivery time outweigh the high cost. Therefore, I recommend using Bluewave's BWS8429.

Details

The JATEC Police Agency is planning to install new map display equipment which will retrieve and display a map quickly on a CRT in front of dispatchers when accidents, robberies, and murders occur. By watching the map, dispatchers in police stations will be able to inform policemen in patrol cars where the accidents occur. To meet the needs of this agency, the computer graphic laboratory at JRC must develop the display equipment that will aid them in this endeavor. Therefore, the computer graphics laboratory has decided to buy and use the best processor already existing on the market. I have compared the processing speed, host microprocessing unit, delivery, sample price, and the packaging of six microprocessors. The results are shown in table 1.

1. Processing Speed

Bluewave's BWS8429 and Marine's MAR88252 have almost the same high processing ability and are the only two processors which meet the specification of decompressing a picture within 0.2 seconds. The two processors can decompress a picture within 0.11 seconds and 0.09 seconds respectively. The processing ability of the other processors is much lower than that of these two. Because only Bluewave's BWS8429 and Marine's MAR88252 meet the speed specification, these two processors are compared below.

2. Host Microprocessing Unit

The BWS8429 is compatible with Motorola's MC68000, which we have often used before. Therefore, the BWS8429 can be run easily by modifying and installing one of the programs which we have already developed. The MAR88282 is compatible with Intel’s I8086. Therefore, to use the MAR88252, a new program must be developed.

3. Delivery

The BWS8429 can be delivered immediately. However, the MAR88252 cannot be delivered until January, 1996.

4. Sample Price

The BWS8429 is less expensive than the MAR88252. The BWS8429 and the MAR88252 cost $3 1.00 and $40.50, respectively. However, the price is reduced when purchased in mass. For example, if more than 10,000 processors are bought, the price is reduced to half of the sample price.

5. Packaging

The packaging of the BWS8429 and the MAR88252 is almost the same in size. The BWS8429 and the MAR88252 use QFP 100 and QFP 120, respectively.

The BWS8429 meets the speed specification, can be operated easily by modifying and installing a program, and can be delivered immediately. On the other hand, the MAR88252 meets the speed specification; however, it cannot be run easily and cannot be delivered until Jan. 1996. Thus, I recommend that the BWS8429 should be adopted.

Conclusion

I recommend using the BWS8429 because the processor meets the speed specification, can be run easily, and can be delivered immediately. The other processors do not meet the specifications. The price of the BWS8429 is the second most expensive; however, the price can be reduced by purchasing in mass.
